Wine Club Newsletter July 2017

As we get deeper into summer the last few days has brought smoke from the Detwiler fire burning south of us. That’s a constant reminder that our hot summers sometimes don’t come with a heavy cost. After having gone through this imminent fire danger in recent years we wish everyone involved the best. The smoke doesn’t seem to directly affect the grape crop this early in development unless it is very prolonged exposure to very heavy smoke. They are projecting a containment date of August 5th on this fire as of right now, so let’s hope for all involved it is much sooner than that. Moving on to the business at hand, we have a couple of great wines to share with you. Your credit card has been charged $33.75 for these two selections plus tax and any applicable shipping. If you have chosen to pick up your wine club, you may do so at any time.

The Wines:

Seeing Red

Another round of everyone’s favorite lady is back. For those of you unfamiliar, this is our red table wine that we intentionally change the blend on every year. This is always made to be a lighter style of red wine that is very approachable for almost anyone. This year’s blend is Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Mourvedre and a little Barbera. A most untypical blend as it has been in the past always brings some interesting characteristics to the palate. Great lighter style red fruit with very low tannin also makes it very easy to drink. We’ve also had good success very lightly chilling this one for those unbearably hot days when you still need a glass of wine. Note: This wine has some light tartrates at the bottom of the bottle, very common in blends when the wines aren’t combined until after the barrel aging process.

2014 “Thaddeus” Zinfandel

As usual I was looking over last year’s description of the wines and realized I could have used this one almost word for word. From this very special vineyard we have another big, jammy Zin that seems to resonate with a lot of folks. This 2014 again was Double Gold at the El Dorado County fair, won the Herbert award for best El Dorado Zin and won a Gold medal at the State Fair. My goodness, I guess they liked it. The Souza family pours their heart and soul into this vineyard and maybe that’s what makes it so good, my job is to just not screw it up. This one works with many types of food but is very capable of standing alone as well. I looked over our numbers for last year and this is the only wine to ever sell out quicker than the Petit Verdot, so I’m not expecting it be around very long. Grab it up!
